Changing the Face of Medical Aesthetics: GetHarley Raises £52 million in Latest Fundraising Round

GetHarley raised £52 million in their latest funding round and appears destined for success. Today, we'll discuss why, and what inspired the solo founder Charmaine Chow to embark on the ambitious journey of moving medical aesthetics online.

We’ve all been there, spending hours online flicking through endless bottles of retinol-this and peptide serum-that, with dreams of beautiful skin but with little knowledge of what is right for us. Now, imagine having 1-1 tailored skincare advice for a fraction of the cost of a regular consultation—literally at your fingertips.

The woman who is making this happen?

Charmain Chow, founder and CEO of GetHarley.

Charmaine Chow founded GetHarley in 2018, inspired by her own struggle to navigate the overwhelming and complex world of skincare. While managing a demanding corporate job in London, she was determined to prioritise her skin health but faced two significant challenges: limited time and an overwhelming array of confusing product options.

What began as a side hustle quickly grew into something more. Each morning before work, Chow personally delivered customized skincare boxes to customers across the city, addressing the very problem she had faced. As demand surged and clinical practitioners expressed a growing need to embrace digital solutions, the idea for GetHarley truly took shape.

In just five years, Chow transformed her passion project into a thriving startup that is now redefining the medical aesthetics industry, seamlessly bridging the gap between expert skincare advice and convenience.

With over 100,000 customers and a pool of 1,000 expert clinical practitioners, GetHarley is enabling women from across the globe to access specialist clinician support and tailored skincare products at the touch of a button. Skincare journeys are recorded through customers submitting photographs to the website, and they are matched with a suitable practitioner based on their unique needs. A 1-1 appointment is then conducted, where skincare recommendations are made to the customer.

Post-appointment, customers can purchase recommendations directly from the platform and have products delivered to their door within just a couple of days.

Chow believes that being independent and not an ‘e-tailer’ is a draw for consumers. Unlike other websites, clinical practitioners are not limited to recommending any specific product, and they work with a range of brands from Medik8 to Obagi and SkinBetterScience to offer the unique products that are right for the customer’s skin needs. This is resulting in no market competition for the growing platform.

Plus, it’s not only solving problems for the consumer. Chow wanted to help clinicians grow and scale their businesses too.

“Clinicians are the heartbeat of GetHarley, and it’s traditionally a brick-and-mortar business model which is difficult to scale. I wanted to bring their expertise and services online to help them grow their businesses, whilst removing the friction of getting expert knowledge into the hands of the consumer.” Charmain Chow

Since 2019, solo founder Charmain Chow has been on a mission to raise capital to fund her startup and tap into the £60 billion market for medical-grade skincare and aesthetic treatments.

As a former Executive Director at Goldman Sachs, Chow is no stranger to the challenges of raising funds. She has successfully completed three funding rounds, securing an impressive £52 million in her latest Series B round. Top investors, including Index Ventures, Visionaries Club, and Headline, are backing the digital platform.

With a post-money valuation of £114 million, GetHarley shows no signs of slowing down. The company continues to expand its customer base, its team, and its pool of clinical practitioners. Currently boasting a 93-strong team, the start-up is actively hiring across roles like Account Executives, Backend Engineers, and Financial Accountants (check out LinkedIn for more info).

As the digital revolution reshapes skincare and medical aesthetics, GetHarley is paving the way for accessible, high-quality skincare solutions.

Investing in Women: Will Reeves’ Budget Deliver for Female-Led Startups?

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves It’s been a whirlwind few months for the UK since Labour swept into office with their majority win in July. Chancellor Rachel Reeves, the first female Chancellor of the Exchequer, marched us into September with the revelation of a £22bn “black hole” in public finances. By the end of October, Reeves unveiled a new budget boldly branded as “the budget to rebuild Britain”—but at what cost? Over the past year, the UK economy has gained momentum, with gross domestic product (GDP) returning to growth in the first half of 2024 and inflation reaching 2.0% in May—hitting the Bank of England’s target for the first time since 2021. Despite these successes, a £22bn public finance overspend has prompted a tough autumn budget that delivers pay rises for some but taxes for many, including those in enterprise and innovation. With the first female Chancellor’s budget now released, let’s examine what she has said about supporting female-led innovation. Female-l...

From the Kitchen Table to a Mentorship Platform for Corporate Women: The Story behind TALO

Jade Bentwood, Founder/CEO of TALO What happens when a finance powerhouse hits a wall?  For  Jade Bentwood , it was the catalyst for TALO. After a decade of working in finance and building a women’s wealth division from the ground up, Jade knew the corporate landscape well, but it wasn’t until maternity leave that she saw the cracks in how senior female talent was really supported. The real story behind TALO began at the kitchen table, surrounded by a group of senior female leaders and their babies, admitting that the “corporate dream” wasn’t built for them.  Experiencing the sharp disconnect between corporate leadership and the reality of motherhood, Jade realised that “support” for women in business was too often just a policy on paper, not a lived reality. So, she built TALO to change that. Today, we go  Off the Record  with Jade, as she gets candid about leaving corporate life, the loneliness of the founder journey, and why she’s stopped manifesting a 5 a.m....
